Femminello of Syracuse IGP

The Protected Geographic Indication of the Lemon of Syracuse is reserved for the Feminello cultivar and its clones, referred to the botanic species Citrus Limon (L) Burm, cultivated in specialized groves in the territory of the province of Syracuse as defined in the regulations. The fruit which are appointed with the Protected Geographic Indication Lemon of Syracuse must be marketed fresh in the Extra and Prima categories. The use of synthetic waxes and fungicides is prohibited post harvesting. The admissible calibres are: 3, 4, 5.

n particular, the distinctive data of the fruit types according to the harvesting times are as follows:

Primofiore are the fruit gathered starting on 1 October and which comply with the following characteristics:

• Colour of the rind: From green to lemon yellow;
• Shape: Elliptical;
• Size: From medium to large;
• Weight of the fruit: Not less than 100 gr;
• Flesh: Green in colour or lemon yellow;
• Juice: Lemon yellow in colour with yield not lower than 34% and with >6% acidity;
• ° Brix of the flesh: > 7.

Bianchetto or Maiolino (or Spring lemon) are fruit gathered from 15 April and which comply with the following characteristics:
- Colour of the rind: Light yellow;
- Shape: Elliptical or ovoid;
- Size: Large;
- Weight of fruit: Not less than 100 gr;
- Flesh: Yellow in colour;
- Juice: Lemon yellow in colour with yield not less than 30% and with acidity >5.5%;
- Â°Brix of the flesh: > 6.5.

Verdello (or Summer lemon): are fruit gathered starting on 1 July and which comply with the following characteristics:

• Colour of the rind: Light green;
• Shape: Elliptical – spheroidal;
• Size: Medium-Large;
• Weight of fruit: Not less than 100 gr;
• Flesh: Lemon Yellow; 
• Juice: Lemon yellow in colour with yield not less than 25% and with acidity >5.5%;
• °Brix of the flesh: > 6.

Nutritional Characteristics: Vitamin C, Flavonoids, mineral salts.
Territory of Provenance: The geographic area of cultivation in the Protected Geographic Indication Lemon of Syracuse extends for over 10 km from the Ionian Sea, does not exceed 210 metres above sea level, and is limited to the North and South respectively by the valleys exposed to the South of the Porcaria Torrent and the Tellaro River.
